Something new and exciting is taking place just South of Naples in Marco Island! An artificial reef composed of about 600 to 800 tons of pipes and other concrete material is scheduled on Jan 9th, 2016 to be transported and launched into the ocean just a few miles off shore into the Gulf of Mexico.
A ceremony will be taking place the day before the launch at the S.S. Judge Jolly Bridge where the materials were collected. The ceremony will feature a ribbon cutting by Collier County’s Commissioner, Donna Fiala and there will also be local minister to bless the reef before its launch into the ocean on January 9th.
A few boats and a barge will drop off the artificial reef 10 miles from Gordon Pass. It is said that it will be the largest artificial reef in the Western Hemisphere measuring one quarter mile by one-quarter mile in depths of 36ft to 74ft of water. The reef project will overall bring our community more jobs and attract more tourists such as avid divers.
